In a floating-type disc brake, the caliper has a certain amount of movement relative to the bracket. A brake piston is located inside the housing. When the brake pedal is pressed, it moves one pad toward the disc. The housing then slides along the guide pins and presses the second pad against the opposite side. Thanks to this design, the braking force is distributed between two friction surfaces.
For normal operation, the caliper must move freely along the guide pins. The piston must also return to its original position after braking is completed. The dust boot protects the moving and sealed parts from water, dust, and road dirt. Damage to this rubber component often creates conditions for further corrosion.

Over time, moisture can get under the dust boot, and rust may appear on metal surfaces. The guide pin loses its ability to move freely, which means the housing can no longer return to the correct position after the brake pedal is released. Another possible cause is a sticking piston. Corrosion on its working surface or problems with the seal can prevent it from fully returning after braking.
In this situation, one of the brake pads may remain pressed against the disc even when the pedal is released. The wheel is subjected to constant friction, the temperature rises, and the friction material wears out faster.

It is difficult to identify the exact cause based solely on the vehicle’s behavior. The condition of the guide pins, piston, dust boots, and other components of the mechanism must be assessed.
The first changes may not be noticed immediately by the driver. After several braking events, one wheel begins to get hotter than the others, and after stopping, a characteristic smell of heated friction material may appear. As the problem develops, the vehicle’s behavior also changes.

A vehicle pulling to one side during deceleration is not an unambiguous sign of a faulty caliper. A similar effect can result from faults in other components of the brake system, the suspension, or differences in tire grip on the road.
Particular attention should be paid to overheating of a brake disc on one side. A temperature difference between the wheels after driving the same route may indicate that one brake mechanism is constantly applying pressure. A hot brake disc should not be checked by touch because the metal temperature after intensive braking can be dangerously high.
Not every case of seizure requires installation of a new assembly. First, it is necessary to determine which component has lost normal movement and how severely the surfaces inside the housing have been affected.
When the problem is related to the guide pins, they can be replaced or, if their condition allows, restored. A damaged dust boot should also be replaced without waiting for more serious corrosion to develop. A sticking piston may require disassembling the caliper, cleaning the mounting surfaces, and installing new seals.
A caliper repair kit is used for restoration, and its contents depend on the specific design. It may include the piston seal, dust boot, and other components required for the repair.
Complete replacement becomes justified when the housing has significant damage, corrosion has affected critical surfaces, or restoration no longer provides an economic advantage.
The cost of repairing caliper guide pins depends on the design of the mechanism, the cost of the parts, and the amount of labor involved. Therefore, determining the price based solely on the name of the fault is incorrect.
A brake pad that remains in constant contact with the disc does not simply wear out faster. Continuous friction generates a significant amount of heat, while the working surface of the rotor is subjected to uneven loading. The longer the vehicle is operated in this condition, the more components are put at risk.
The causes of uneven brake pad wear are not always related to the caliper, but a seized caliper is one possible cause. One pad may wear much faster than the other, while the disc gradually develops signs of overheating.

This is where a small problem turns into a more expensive repair. If the cause of the constant pad contact is eliminated in time, premature wear of components that were initially in good condition can be prevented.
A seized floating caliper affects the operation of the entire braking mechanism on that particular wheel. Constant contact between the pad and disc generates heat, changes the pattern of wear, and can affect the vehicle’s behavior during deceleration. Therefore, when a characteristic smell, severe heating of one wheel, or uneven wear of the components appears, it is important to find the cause rather than simply replacing the brake pads.
