The situation when the steering wheel shakes at speed occurs quite often even in serviceable cars. The driver may notice a slight shaking of the steering wheel or a more noticeable vibration while driving at a speed of 80–90 km/h. Sometimes the vibration appears only at a certain speed, and after changing it almost disappears.
Most often, the vibration of the steering wheel at speed is associated with the wheels of the car. While driving, each wheel should rotate evenly, without shifting the center of gravity. If the balance is disturbed, an imbalance of the wheels occurs, which creates a centrifugal force during rotation.
This force is transmitted to the suspension and steering, due to which the driver feels the steering wheel shaking. The higher the speed, the stronger the vibration of the car can be. That is why even a slight imbalance of the wheels becomes noticeable during high-speed driving.
It is undesirable to ignore such a problem. Constant vibrations create additional stress on the suspension system, accelerate tire wear, and can gradually affect the condition of the suspension.
To understand why the steering wheel is shaking, you need to consider several technical factors. In most cases, the source of the problem lies in the wheels or the parts that are responsible for their correct rotation.
The most common reasons are as follows:
Most often, vibration occurs due to wheel imbalance. During tire installation, even a slight shift in mass can disrupt the balance. As a result, the wheel rotates unevenly, and the center of gravity shifts. At low speeds, this is almost imperceptible, but with increasing speed, the vibrations become noticeable.
Sometimes the cause may be the condition of the tires. If the rubber is worn unevenly or has been deformed after hitting a pothole, the wheel begins to rotate with a slight deviation. This causes the car to vibrate, which is transmitted to the steering wheel.
Damaged car rims can also cause a similar effect. Even a slight curvature after a strong impact changes the geometry of the wheel’s rotation.
Wheel balancing is a procedure that allows you to eliminate imbalance and restore uniform rotation of the wheel. During this procedure, the wheel is installed on a special balancing stand, which determines the point of displacement of the center of gravity.
After measuring, the master installs small balancing weights on the disk. They compensate for the difference in mass and allow the wheel to rotate without oscillations.
When balancing is done correctly, steering wheel vibration at speed disappears or is significantly reduced. The car moves more stably, and the steering wheel does not transmit extraneous vibrations.
Correct wheel balancing also affects the durability of tires. If the wheel rotates without deviations, the tread wears out more evenly. This helps to avoid premature wear of the rubber and maintains stable grip on the road.
In addition, the load on bearings, shock absorbers and other elements of the suspension system is reduced.
Wheel balancing is performed at a tire shop when installing a new set of tires or seasonal tire replacement. This is a standard procedure that ensures proper operation of the wheels immediately after installation.
However, the balance can also be disrupted during vehicle operation. For example, after a strong impact of the wheel on a pothole or curb, the weight of the wheel can shift. In this case, the car vibrates or the steering wheel begins to shake.
Balancing should also be checked after tire repair, installing new car wheels, or if an inexplicable vibration occurs while driving.
If the steering wheel shakes at speed, checking the wheel balance often helps to quickly find and eliminate the problem. Timely balancing at a tire shop maintains stable vehicle handling, reduces tire wear, and helps to avoid unnecessary load on the suspension system.
