After a heavy summer downpour, city streets can sometimes turn into real bodies of water. Seeing other vehicles make their way through a flooded section of road, drivers often underestimate the risks and continue driving without slowing down. From the outside, the situation may seem harmless, but at that very moment the engine risks suffering one of the most expensive types of damage.
Engine hydrolock, the consequences of which are often measured in tens of thousands of hryvnias, occurs suddenly. Just a few seconds of contact between the engine and water are enough to cause serious damage. The most dangerous part is that many vehicle owners do not realize the scale of the problem and attempt to restart the engine after it has stalled.
For an engine to operate normally, an air-fuel mixture enters the combustion chamber. Air compresses easily as the piston moves upward, allowing combustion to occur without excessive stress on mechanical components.
Water is a completely different story. If water enters the engine through the air intake and then passes through the air filter, it may reach the cylinder. Unlike air, water is practically incompressible. This property of liquid compression lies at the core of hydrolock.
When the piston continues moving upward while water is already present in the combustion chamber, an enormous load is placed on engine components. The liquid effectively becomes a solid barrier that cannot be compressed. At that moment, the impact force is transferred to the engine connecting rod, crankshaft, and other elements of the crank mechanism.
That is why even a relatively small amount of water can cause serious damage to the powertrain.
The extent of the damage depends on the amount of water that entered the engine and the engine speed at the moment hydrolock occurred. The higher the RPM, the more severe the consequences are usually.
The most common signs and consequences of engine hydrolock include:
In severe cases, restoring the engine becomes economically impractical. At that point, owners may face the need for an expensive engine overhaul in Kyiv or even a complete engine replacement.
During a heavy rainstorm, it is impossible to eliminate all risks completely, but they can be significantly reduced.
Before entering a flooded section of road, it is advisable to:
The question of how to drive through a deep puddle without risking engine damage becomes especially common after severe road flooding. There is no universal answer because the safe water depth depends on the design of the specific vehicle. If the water level approaches the lower edge of the bumper or if it is impossible to determine the depth of the obstacle, choosing an alternative route is the safer option.
Owners of vehicles with low-mounted air intakes should be particularly cautious.
The most dangerous mistake usually occurs after the vehicle has already stalled in the middle of a flooded area. The desire to immediately check whether the engine will restart often leads to even more serious damage.
If there is any suspicion that water has entered the air filter or intake system, attempting to restart the engine can completely destroy it. Even if the initial damage was minimal, a few additional rotations of the starter motor may significantly worsen the situation.
The correct course of action is simple:
The question “what to do if water gets into the engine” has only one correct answer: stop all attempts to start the engine and have the vehicle diagnosed. It is the repeated start attempt after water ingress that most often turns a local issue into a costly repair.
Hydrolock is one of those failures that is far easier to prevent than to repair. A few minutes of cautious driving during a heavy rainstorm can protect the engine from severe damage and save the owner from lengthy downtime and substantial restoration costs.
