The Mercedes M177 4.0L V8 Biturbo petrol engine has been produced since 2015 and is installed on powerful AMG models.
This engine is a development of the AMG philosophy: a compact aluminum V8 with two turbines, direct injection and DOHC design. Power – up to 639 hp, and torque – up to 900 Nm. An impressive engine, but has its own peculiarities in maintenance.
Problem: Direct injection injectors are sensitive to fuel quality. Using gasoline below AI-98 or contaminated fuel leads to clogging and wear.
How to fix: We perform ultrasonic cleaning or replace the injectors with original Bosch ones adapted to your ECU.
Problem: some engines showed a drop in oil pressure up to 100 thousand km due to wear or a defective pump.
We carry out diagnostics of oil pressure in dynamics, replace the pump with an updated OEM version, install a new seal and valve.
Problem: High temperatures in the turbine area lead to a loss of tightness of the valve cover gaskets and the crankcase drain plug.
How to fix: Replace the gaskets with heat-resistant ones with increased reinforcement, perform an inspection of the crankcase ventilation.
Problem: Power and temperature in the M177 “eat” spark plugs and coils twice as fast as usual.
How to fix: We install spark plugs with the correct temperature mode (for example, NGK Laser Iridium), update the coils to original Bremi or Beru.
Problem: With a significant increase in power, the connecting rods may not withstand more than 1000 Nm.
How to fix: If you are planning Stage 2/3, we recommend modifying the piston group and connecting rods for loading.
