The BMW N20 four-cylinder petrol engines with a capacity of 1.6 and 2.0 liters belong to the generation of turbocharged engines with direct injection, which were produced from 2011 to 2018. These units were created as an economical and lighter alternative to the naturally aspirated inline sixes of the N52 and N53 series.
The engines were installed on popular BMW models with rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and even front-wheel drive (for example, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer), as well as X-series crossovers. In addition, a special version of the N26 was used in the USA to meet strict SULEV emission standards.

1. Timing chain wear and risk of seizure
