    BMW N13 petrol engines (1.6 l, 2011–2016)

    BMW N13 1.6-litre inline-four turbo petrol engines were produced from 2011 to 2016. They were the result of BMW’s collaboration with the French PSA (Peugeot-Citroën) group and were known by PSA under the EP6CDT designation. These engines were installed only on the BMW 1-Series (F20) and 3-Series (F30) models. The engine combines direct injection, Valvetronic III, dual-VANOS and twin-scroll turbocharger technologies.

    Typical problems and weak points of BMW N13

    1. Sensitivity to fuel and lubricant

    The engine does not tolerate low-quality gasoline and lubricant. A drop in the quality of service quickly leads to expensive breakdowns.

    2. Carbon deposits

    Like most direct injection engines, N13 is prone to carbon deposits on the intake valves. This leads to detonation, uneven engine operation and loss of power.

    3. Injectors and fuel system

    Fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel pumps can fail as early as 80-100 thousand km. Symptoms: traction dips, detonation, increased fuel consumption.

    4. Valvetronic and VANOS

    Failures in the Valvetronic and VANOS systems begin after 100 thousand km. Often accompanied by OBD2 errors and unstable engine operation.

    5. Timing chain stretching

    The chain can stretch after 100-120 thousand km. Accompanied by a characteristic noise when cold and phase errors.

    6. Cooling

    The water pump or thermostat often fails, especially after 50-70 thousand km. This can lead to engine overheating.
