The naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder BMW N52 petrol engines were produced from 2004 to 2011. They replaced the M54 series and were the first BMW engines made from magnesium-aluminum alloy. After the 2007 update, these units received the indexes N52K and N52N. The engines are known for their high technical characteristics, smooth operation, but have several weak points.
1. High oil consumption
After 100,000 km, the valve stem seals often harden, and the thin piston rings become stuck, which leads to oil consumption.
2. Malfunction of the PCV valve
A ruptured membrane leads to smoke, increased oil consumption, and unstable operation.
3. Coking
A combination of the above problems leads to the formation of deposits on the valves and pistons.
4. Floating speed
The cause is usually a malfunction of Valvetronic or Double VANOS. Also, the Valvetronic actuator breaks down.
5. Noise from hydraulic compensators
On engines from 2004-2009, hydraulic compensators can “tick” when cold.
6. Electronics
Often the oil level sensor fails, which is why the driver does not notice a critical decrease in the volume of lubricant.
