The V8-biturbo Mercedes M278 engine with a direct thrust volume of 4.6 liters appeared in 2010 as a successor to the popular naturally aspirated M273. It belonged to the powerful E-, S-, CLS-, GL- and GLE-class models, where it combines high torque (up to 700 Nm) with the comfort and dynamics of a business class.
The engine is equipped with two Garrett turbines, a timing chain drive, phase regulators and a CGI direct injection system. In the top versions, the power reaches 455 hp, and the resource is up to 300,000 km with proper maintenance.
Problem: After 100-150 thousand km, the tensioner wears out, causing the chain to stretch and start knocking when cold. If you do not react, the phase regulators wear out and the timing belt needs to be completely replaced.
How to fix: We completely replace the chain, sprockets, tensioner and phase regulators with an updated set.
Problem: The pump sometimes does not create the required pressure, especially when the engine is hot. This causes a decrease in lubrication and wear of the liners.
How to fix: Check the oil pressure under load, replace the pump with the original, diagnose the lubrication channels.
Problem: The block has an aluminum Alusil coating, which is sensitive to detonation. When using low-quality gasoline or increased carbon deposits, burrs appear in the cylinders.
How to fix: Use only AI-98 gasoline, clean the intake and EGR, if worn out – restore the block by sleeving.
Problem: Piezoelectric injectors are very sensitive to overheating and fuel quality. They often fail before 100 thousand km.
How to fix: Replace new Siemens/Bosch injectors, adapt to the ECU, mandatory cleaning of the fuel system.
Problem: Over time, a leak occurs due to the valve cover gaskets, turbines and drain plug.
How to fix: Repair with replacement of heat-resistant gaskets, check of crankcase ventilation.
