A metallic rattling sound that sometimes appears during acceleration or while driving uphill is commonly referred to by drivers as “engine pinging” or “knocking.” In reality, this sound has nothing to do with the piston pins. It is caused by engine detonation, the uncontrolled ignition of the air fuel mixture. Understanding what causes engine knock makes it clear that even occasional detonation can significantly reduce the lifespan of the engine.

During normal engine operation, once the spark plug fires, the flame front spreads gradually through the combustion chamber at a speed of approximately 20 to 30 m/s. Pressure rises smoothly, allowing energy to be transferred evenly to the piston.
Detonation follows a completely different process. Part of the air fuel mixture ignites spontaneously before the main flame front reaches it. At that moment, a shock wave is generated, with a speed that may exceed 2,000 m/s. This sudden pressure spike creates powerful impacts against the piston crown, the combustion chamber walls, and the cylinder head. These impacts are heard as the characteristic metallic knocking sound.
Interestingly, the problem often appears only under heavy engine load. A vehicle may drive normally in city traffic, but during overtaking or a long uphill climb the familiar metallic noise suddenly appears. Because of this, many drivers postpone having the vehicle inspected, even though the destructive process has already begun.
Several factors can trigger engine detonation.
• using gasoline with an octane rating lower than recommended by the manufacturer;
• carbon deposits inside the combustion chamber;
• a faulty knock sensor;
• a lean air fuel mixture;
• engine overheating.
The problem often begins after refueling with gasoline that does not meet the engine manufacturer’s specifications. In such cases, the risk of premature combustion increases significantly.
Carbon deposits can also change combustion conditions. Over time, deposits reduce the volume of the combustion chamber, effectively increasing the compression ratio. In addition, glowing carbon particles can become an ignition source themselves.
The knock sensor also plays an important role. It sends information to the engine control unit, which adjusts the ignition timing. If the sensor fails or transmits incorrect data, the system cannot compensate for dangerous combustion conditions quickly enough.
Another possible cause is a lean air fuel mixture. This may result from clogged fuel injectors, vacuum leaks, or faults in certain engine management system components.
A single episode does not always cause immediate engine damage, but every shock wave places additional stress on engine components. If detonation occurs repeatedly, the damage gradually accumulates.
The components most commonly affected are:
• pistons;
• piston ring lands;
• the cylinder head;
• connecting rod bearings;
• the crankshaft.
Initially, localized overheating develops on the piston crown. Over time, this may lead to burned through pistons. Damage to the piston ring lands results in compression loss and increased engine oil consumption.
Prolonged exposure to detonation may also cause cracks in the cylinder head, while constant shock loads accelerate wear of the connecting rod bearings. These are among the most common consequences of engine knock when the problem is ignored for an extended period.
If a metallic knocking sound appears after refueling or repeatedly occurs under load, you should avoid testing the engine with aggressive acceleration.
In this situation, it is advisable to:
• use fuel with the octane rating recommended by the manufacturer;
• avoid placing the engine under heavy load at low RPM;
• inspect the fuel system;
• perform a computerized engine diagnostic.
If there are still concerns about the condition of the piston assembly after the initial inspection, a borescope inspection can be performed. This procedure allows technicians to examine the combustion chamber and pistons without disassembling the engine and determine whether the shock loads have already damaged internal components.
If diagnostics confirm mechanical damage, the final repair cost can only be determined after inspecting the vehicle. The price depends on the extent of the damage, the engine design, and the amount of repair work required.
