Noise when lowering and raising the window, the inability to close it normally, the lack of response to the control button – these are the most common symptoms of a malfunction of power windows in modern cars.
The failure of this system is admittedly harmless to driving safety, but at the same time precludes comfortable use of the vehicle. There is little pleasure in driving in the rain with an open window or parking such a car somewhere.
At present, it is difficult to imagine a car without power windows. Manual mechanisms can only be found on older cars, and the use of an electrical system only slightly increases the price of a car. But what to do if your glass stops working properly?
Fuse check
The first thing to check if any electrical component fails is the fuse. The fuse box is located under the steering wheel. On the top case of the box there is a fuse marking – this will help you find exactly the one you need.
Just changing the fuse is just the beginning. The failure may reoccur. If the fuse is blown, there is a short circuit somewhere in the system. The relay responsible for the operation of the power windows could also fail. The relay can be in a box under the steering wheel, along with fuses, or in a box under the hood of the car.
Symptoms of a failed power window
How to determine that the window regulator is faulty? The main symptoms are as follows:
- intermittent operation of the lift (lift stops during operation);
- the window does not close well, as if it has come off the guide (bulges out) or does not touch the upper edge of the window;
- glass makes a lot of noise when moving;
- when closing, the glass hits the upper window frame with great force;
- the window does not respond to pressing the control button.
What to do if the window does not close? If replacing the fuses does not help, you will need the help of a professional auto mechanic.
How is the repair going?
In case of damage to the wires, you can use a whole new bundle of cables going to the door, or replace one specific wire (there are special repair kits).
In case of damage to the mechanism itself, a completely new window mechanism is installed. To do this, it is necessary to dismantle the door panels and other coverings from the inside of the door. Broken gears are usually beyond repair. They can be cleaned, rusted and lubricated, but this rarely fixes problems in operation.
